The 7th and 8th Graders have started Cell Reproduction, and are very excited about learning about Mitosis and Meiosis. They have also watched the movie GATTACA in class, which deals with the not-so-distant futuristic topic of genetic engineering.

The students will have a test over Cell Reproduction this Friday. From there, we will dive deeper into genetics, an exciting topic!

6th Grade Science

6th grade is now studying invertebrates, one of the two main divisions of the Animal Kingdom. Sometime this week or next, we will be doing a dissection of an Earthworm, one of the animals from the Invertebrate Phylum! Hopefully your child will bring home exciting news about what they have discovered!

5th grade is still studying the Earth, rocks, and minerals. In the next week or two, the students will have a test over these concepts. A study guide will be going home soon to help prepare your child, so be on the lookout for it!

Right now, the 4th grade is studying Weather and the things that affect and shape our Earth. The students turned in their amazing dinosaur projects after spring break, where they are currently on display in the library. If you get a chance, please stop by and see what a great job they did!

4th Grade Science: Late March/Early April

Right now in 4th grade, we are studying Dinosaurs! I am sure you have seen parts of your child's Dinosaur Project before or during spring break. The students are super excited about the project. They have been diligently working in the computer lab and in class. I cannot wait to see their projects! I sent out a homeworkwatcher over break, but I also let the students know that their project is due on Tuesday, March 30th. I told them earlier it would be due Monday, but we all know how Mondays can be, especially after a week-long vacation from school!

After we share some of our dinosaur projects, we will begin talking about the wonderful world of Weather. Hopefully someday soon, you will have a personal meteorologist at your home!

5th Grade Science: Late March/Early April

In 5th grade, we are learning about the Earth's layers, minerals, and this week we will begin talking about rocks! Who knew the Earth could be so exciting? Before spring break, we did a lab where the students had to use their notes and what we had been discussing to try to identify different minerals. We used the following: hardness, streak (using a porcelain plate), color, cleavage, fracture, and geometric shape to help us identify calcite from talc, pyrite from hematite! We will be going over the results of that lab this week. We will do a similar lab with rocks, which are much easier to find on a daily basis. Encourage your scientist to find some rocks in your community to identify!

6th Grade Science: End of March/Early April

In science in 6th grade, we have just finished up learning about bacteria, protists, and fungi, and boy, was it fun..guys! Now, we are moving on to the Animal Kingdom and taking a closer look at vertebrates and invertebrates. Hopefully in a few weeks we will be doing a dissection!

Students will be finishing up their Bacteria labs this week and next week. The students went around the school to different locations and swabbed "specimens" to plate on freshly-prepared agar plates. After plating the bacteria, the students then added a square (on one side of the plate) covered in anti-bacterial hand sanitizer to see if the sanitizer was truly helping us or if it may just be a waste of time. The result? Some groups had an enormous amount of growth, meaning a lot of bacteria, while other groups barely saw a few colonies and some fungus growth (meaning the bacteria was inhibited by the hand sanitizer!). The students will share their results with one another, graph the data, and their analyze the information. They will be given class time to type up their responses and then submit their first real lab report! This is to prepare them for the following years of middle and high school.

7th and 8th Grade Science

In 7th and 8th grade science this week, we are starting cell division: mitosis and meiosis! This wondrous topic will lead us into the very heart of genetics: our genes and all they control! The students have been dying to talk about mutations, and finally we are arriving at that subject. Hopefully in a few weeks your child can tell you about some of the crazy things that can happen, all because one nucleotide was misplaced!

February/March Science

Right now in Science...

4th Grade is doing a research project on a dinosaur of each student's choosing. We are using the computers, internet, and library books to do our research. Each student will also be making a model of his/her dinosaur to share with the class after spring break.

5th grade just finished learning about the Solar System. We have been spending the past couple weeks talking about the Earth, its layers, as well as minerals that come from deep inside it. Last Friday we started a lab on growing crystals, so we are excited to see how those turn out!

6th grade is learning about three of the kingdoms--Bacteria, Fungi, and Protists. Last Thursday we swabbed various places around the school to see what kind of bacteria is growing, and to see if the hand-sanitizer we use is REALLY helping get rid of the bacteria! We will be finishing up these kingdoms before spring break so when the students get back, we can start discussing Animals and hopefully do a dissection!

7th and 8th grade have moved from Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes, and Volcanoes into the blueprint for all living things--DNA. Last Friday we spooled our own DNA using cheek cells and various chemicals. The students were very excited to see what we have been talking about for a few weeks! We will be finishing up DNA, RNA, and Protein Synthesis before spring break so we can move into Cell Division and Genetics.
